How did you become a Web designer?

My majors in college were social work and business. After working in the field of social work for about four years, I decided to make a career change. I chose HR Management because I thought it would be a nice transition between a helping role and business. While in school for HR Management, I instantly fell in love with an Electronic Publishing class using Pagemaker. So much so that my instructor suggested that I go and learn something called HTML. I can remember looking up at her and saying, "What is HTML?" So off I went to my local Community College to learn something called HTML.

Are you self-taught or did you get a degree?

I earned a certificate in web design and the rest of my knowledge was obtained by work experience, reading books and teaching and challenging myself. I did freelance work on the side while at my first entry-level web designer job. I learned from my day job and applied that to my freelance work/business.

  • It was a long, strange road that I took to become a web designer. However, I cannot think of anything that I would do differently. I had to take all the steps I took - good and bad - to learn for myself and truly understand the experience.

Tracy shows that just because you start in something that some might consider a non-technical degree (Social work in this case, Linguistics in my case) doesn't mean you can't become a successful Web designer.
