Why I think this design works
Very clean design, simple navigation. The JavaScript calendar tabs provide an easy way to access the meeting schedule and degrade gracefully if JS is turned off in the user's browser. Other essential information is immediately visible with no hunting.
The background graphic coffee cup represents the ubiquitous coffee at all AA meetings and the book is "Alcoholics Anonymous" open to a section that is often read at the start of a meeting, so the graphic is very meaningful to the target audience. No other graphics are used so the pages are light and load quickly.
My goals were to make the site as simple, informative and accessible as possible and keep clutter to a minimum but still be attractive.
Tips and Tricks
- Keep the code simple for easy maintenance, fast loading and cross browser compatibility.
- I don't use CSS hacks to get around browser problems - either I find a way to code it so conflicts are eliminated or I accept some minimal level of things not appearing quite exactly right in outdated browsers.
- Know your target audience.
