Deciding to become a Web designer
The idea of becoming a web developer came to me as pure inspiration. I woke up one morning knowing this is what I wanted to do. The reason came later: I find it is a great combination of computer programming, creativity, and freelance business.
It is what fitted best my background (scientific/technical) and my independent personality.
A Typical Day as a Web Designer
I work from home as a freelancer. I start the day with checking my clients/partners emails, my Google reader (on work related topics only!!), connecting with other businesses on Twitter.
Then comes the bulk of the day: designing and programming web applications.
If I am too tired to concentrate on programming at the end of the day, I open a textbook and learn learn learn.
Advice
- KEEP LEARNING! Technologies and programming languages are constantly evolving. Make the most of it. Don't be afraid of spending a few quiet days with your nose in a textbook. It can massively improve your productivity and confidence, which in turn seriously helps to impress clients and inspire trust.
How did you get started as a Web Designer?
It represented a career move for me. I recycled my scientific/technical background by studying the specifics of web development while keeping my old job. Once qualified, I quit my old job and launched my freelance web development business.
What is your favorite part of being a Web designer?
It's the ability to work as a freelancer which offers that perfect combination of creativity, computer programming and business.
How many hours a week do you typically work?
40 with variations around deadlines.
What areas of your career would you improve?
At this stage there is still room for my business to grow. Other than that, I just want to keep it that way. I love it!
