Deciding to become a Web designer

I have always been interested in computers. I learned BASIC in High School back in 1980. I worked through 'What Color is Your Parachute', and thought that web design would be well suited to my personality.

A Typical Day as a Web Designer

I start early, 6:30 a.m. or so. Usually, I am writing HTML. I take a long break in the late morning, often three or four hours. In the afternoon I meet with clients, and do marketing work, and write more code if I am busy. I knock off around 4:00 p.m., unless I have a big deadline coming up.

Advice

  • Invest in good software, and take the time to learn how to use it. This will save incredible amounts of time down the road.

How did you get started as a Web Designer?

I started by helping folks with their websites, just as a favor. Then I started charging people to do website work. Eventually, I quit my job in retail and started my own independent webmaster business.

What is your favorite part of being a Web designer?

I like taking ugly, broken existing sites and transforming them into something effective and useful.

How many hours a week do you typically work?

I work around 40 hours per week, including administrative tasks.

What areas of your career would you improve?

I look forward to getting enough referrals that I don't have to spend so much time on marketing efforts.

Jennifer Kyrnin, Web Design / HTML Guide, says:

I'm with Geoff, getting enough referrals so that you don't have to spend as much Marketing time would be wonderful.
