Deciding to become a Web designer
I was completely interested in learning all about the internet, when my family first got connected in the mid-1990's. During my childhood, I loved playing video games on Nintendo, Sega, and Sony platforms, and was incredibly intrigued with the prospect of playing games with others, in real time, meeting people from practically anywhere in the world!
A Typical Day as a Web Designer
Typically, I tend to daily monitor, making updates where necessary, each of the pages I design and/or work on as an administrator ("webmaster") for. I like to work on graphics in my Graphics programs, write out my code either in a .txt file, a Word document, a Microsoft OneNote "SideNote", or even in a WYSIWYG app, if that is the way I am building the site at hand.
Usually, since I am so intrigued by this line of work, I am doing fun little web design tasks all through the day and night at periodic intervals.
Advice
- First things first: for anyone starting in the Web Design field, my beginning advice is to learn basic HTML really well. People who know how to work with Content Management Systems can do good work, but if you know how to write in the code manually, you will be able to solve all kinds of little design quirks that you may face in your daily tasks.
How did you get started as a Web Designer?
My earliest Web Design work was creating a site for my 1st band, Eat @ Joe's, an alternative rock group. I remember mirroring it on Geocities, Angelfire, and Tripod. That's when I first learned basic HTML, and got familiar with Javascript basics. I also did FTP work for a family friend around then.
What is your favorite part of being a Web designer?
While doing coding work is certainly intellectually stimulating, my favorite part of the job of being a Web Designer is doing the admin work, after each site is all set up and in place.
How many hours a week do you typically work?
Typically, I tend to work a forty(40) hour work week.
What areas of your career would you improve?
I would like to attain, even just for testing purposes, all the top of the line programs in this field, and I'd also like to experiment with XML research as it is useful in a variety of real life ways.
