Open source php and other languages have made web design much better, in my opinion. Big companies have teams of individuals that have expertise in one area. Then they combine it all to produce something. Me, the freelance designer does not have the resources or the time to learn all the scripting and coding languages out there. The open source surge has made it much easier and nicer to design, learn and adapt different design features.
