Exercising Creativity
- I was doing free character biography pages for people who roleplayed in the old Prodigy network's chat rooms. One of the players asked me to do his website for pay and also hooked me up with a friend of his who needed a site. Never looked back!

Curiosity
- Whenever I'm on a web page I find interesting, I look around to see who's writing the content. This led me to the "Work at About" link on the bottom of About.com pages.

A friend
- In 2000, a friend who was a Guide at About.com, emailed me about an opening for an Exercise Guide. At the time, I was a personal trainer and I loved to write, but had never thought of doing it for a living. The job seemed a little odd but I thought - why not? It was the best decision I've made in my career.

Dog walking
- I haven't exactly started yet, but I got up the nerve to ask the owner of one of my favorite dogs if was paying our caretaker to walk him at noon. She said it wasn't allowed, but if wanted to she'd be glad to pay me. I've been thinking about setting up as a dog walker for months. I'm pretty excited.

I Jumped in the Deep End
- A few years ago I found an ad from the Mining Company. ;) The company was recruiting people to write about specific topics for a website. I really wanted to write for this company, but I had no clue about html (the code de jure of the time). So I conned a friend into helping me get through the application process and learned on the fly. I still have the coded pages from my early efforts. They make great reference materials for what not to do and they are good for a good laugh now and then.
