Like everything there is no hard and fast rule, it depends on the situation. Having said that, I do believe the major reason for a fixed width layout used to be for compatability with different screen resolutions; but in todays world I don’t believe that applies as much as it once did since event the cheap monitors all support the higher resolutions which afford the designer more lattitued in the page design, ergo the fluid page is adaptive and just looks better. Besides, don’t you just hate having to scroll left-to-right to read a page?

I define a liquid layout a bit different: it looks essentially the same in all monitors. That means a centered fixed width can be liquid, but a left aligned fixed width cannot. I think each site deserves to be looked at individually. For some sites a fixed width looks best (i.e. http://www.indianmotorcycle.com). For other sites I think a percentage width would look better (i.e. most news sites and amazon).
