Answer:
It depends on where you want to be in the future. XML is an easier implementation of SGML, and with the wide popularity of HTML, XML is much more widely used and understood than SGML.
XML is widely used in Web applications, like with Ajax. And many database driven sites have XML at some layer.
The best way to learn XML would be to take the Free XML Class.
