Search engine positioning is an awful lot of luck. But spelling isn't. Follow Jonathan Steele's advicde and don't forget to use a good spell checker.

I built my first site http://www.speechmastery.com to learn how to build a web site. It was around one of my passions, Public Speaking.

It instantly shot up to a PR4 and for two glorious weeks it was in the top 100K in Alexa. Generally it stayed under 500K. I kept building, page by page.

Then several months into the project, horror happened. Many pages got de-listed by the Fabulous Four search engines. Many forums say this happens and the site will usually come back, sometimes even better.

But month by month, nothing happened. It went from having close to 200 listings in the top 30 across all four engines to less than 50. Then I got a new computer with a peculiar ability. It could spell.

Since my new computer would spell check any page I made in any context it was quite horrifying to find not one or two but several misspelled words. and this on just one of my pages.

I looked at a second, a third and finally all of my pages. All had misspelled words. This was something I had depended on my original spell check to find. It failed me.

Page by page making corrections, my pages gradually started to reappear on the major search engines, the length of time visitors stayed increased and page views increased.

Don't let this happen to you. If your spell check challenged like me, hire an editor. In the long run, it could save you time, money and experiencing a bit of horror.

Hiring someone else is also a great option, and will catch issues like homonyms that your spell checker will miss.
