"Someone who maintains a website plus it's updates." - Big
"A webmaster today wears many hats." - Barbara
"When I worked in the Webmasters team for a large investment bank, we were responsible for ensuring that the infrastructure behind the web site was available (ie web servers, application servers, load balancers etc.). Most of the team also had knowledge of HTML etc. One female in the team liked to describe herself as a web mistress, but that it is another story. " - Tim
"I am webmaster specialing in Graphics, xHTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, ASP.NET, mySQL & other database and web related technologies. So to me a webmaster is someone who design website and develop it to make it reality. Website Designer + Website Developer = WEBMASTER" - Sijan
"I think Shawn hit the nail on the head: "...being a master of the Web. Knowing the ins and outs of the source code, how to write source code, fixing problems, then saving and loading your written/coded work." That's what I do, although we have "content providers" who load some of the content, I then review and publish the pages. But the webmaster should be someone who can problem-solve and make appropriate corrections; and knows all the latest Web marketing, graphic and writing standards." - Shirley
"'Webmaster' is an outdated term from the early geeky days of the web. The word has a certain Dungeons & Dragons feel to it. It might still work for those small sites that are built and managed by only one person, but for web teams there is a lot more role definition than the word 'webmaster' encompasses. My web team, for example, consists of designers, developers and programmers. We'd feel silly calling ourselves masters." - Cathy
"Designs, Develops and maintains a corporate or agency website. May determine the website accessibility, markup and or usability standards." - John
"I agree with James." - Derrick
"I agree with James. The "webmaster" is the only POC for all subjects related to the company's website(s)." - Leyla
"i believe it is one who maintains a sites content management system after getting to know the system, changes, updates, and upgrades I code into it as the web application developer (of the content management system). depends reallly ... i design and develop advanced web applications, but I am not a webmaster. I leave that task for those I hire for it because i do not have time." - marcus
