Primary Computer
Home built, Gigabyte GA41MT motherboard with Intel processor and 2Gb Memory. Two hard drives (160Gb and 500Gb), two DVD writers, Zip drive, 3-1/2" floppy drive. Still using an old monitor but plan on buying a new one in the next 12 months or so (was going to buy one a few months ago but had two fans stuff up in the computer and so replaced the case motherboard etc instead.
Primary Software
Window NT SP3 (only updated from NT4 about a year ago).
HTML CSE Validator lite version 8 for updating HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP etc files (because version 9 changed some of the defaults from how I work and rather than have to change the registry to fix the program I swapped back to a version that worked instead).
Currently using Filezilla to FTP files to the server - usually keep it up to date with the latest version.
Two copies of IE6 running on MS Virtual PC - one the XP image with latest Flash and the other on NT whichever version of Flash was the latest one NT supported. Copy of IE7 on virtual PC. Copies of IE8, Opera 9, Opera 10, and latest Firefox, Safari, Google Chrome, and Lynx (when I remember to update them) - older versions of browsers available on my second computer when needed (computers share keyboard, mouse, and monitor via double-click on scrolllock key.
Usually use Paint Shop Pro 5 for most GIF and JPG images (newer versions never offered and additional features I wanted) also GIMP which I mainly use for PNG images (had GIMPshop installed but it looked to make the program harder rather than easier to use).
Currently using latest XAMPP for Apache, PHP, mySQL, myphpadmin etc (had installed the software products separately on prior computer but this combination seemed okay for new computer since I was installing in the E drive and not the G drive which neither XAMPP or WAMP recognised.
What I'd Do Differently
- Still waiting to get a flat screen monitor. Might be able to get one next year if the computer doesn't stuff up again between now and then. Only just got around to adding speakers a couple of months ago
Input Devices (Mouse, Tablet, Trackball)
shared keyboard and mouse
Monitor Size and Number
shared videocom 17"
Other Peripherals
network containing two other computers, two printers, NAS (with 2TB)
What do you use this setup for?
programming and writing about programming and how to use computers, also preparation of training courses on computers
